Evidence (of a Repeating Pattern)
2013, 64" x 144" oil on canvas
"Evidence (of a Repeating Pattern)" is a large, site-specific installation that I was invited to create for a contemporary art exhibition at the Musée du Papier Peint in Mezières, Switzerland. It consists of a canvas that spills out onto the floor of the hexagonal Boudoir Rococo like a curtain, with a giant wallpaper motif that reflects the impressions and influences of the "new world" presented in the original 18th century wallpaper in the different rooms of the chateau.

English version:
Sonja Schenk attempts, through her creations, to describe the changing and evolving dichotomies of man and nature, structure and void, life and death, future and past. "Evidence (of a Repeating Pattern)" is a canvas that spills out onto the floor of the Boudoir Rococo like a curtain, with a giant wallpaper motif that reflects the impressions and influences of the "new world" presented in the different rooms of the chateau.

The canvas – too big, too sumptuous, devouring and immoderate – addresses the evidence of the premises, or perhaps even the threat, of the possible loss, once again, of this paradise found. The painting transforms itself into wallpaper and allows the opening of a discourse on the history of a place and the possibility of the near future and hidden in this desert landscape is the evidence of another reality, of a dream or a mirage: but the calm and the beauty hides a terrible truth.

Catalogue text:
